The meaning of the word QWERTY refers to the most common layout used on computer keyboard. The word is formed by the sequence of six letters placed in the first line of alphabetic characters and read from left to right: Q-W-E-R-T-Y.
This keyboard layout was initially created by Christopher Latham Sholes, an American inventor, when he designed the famous typing machine together with mechanic Carlos S. Glidden. It was known as Sholes and Glidden typewriter (Sholes and Glidden typewriter). In the year 1874, the machine was placed on the market by the company AND. Remington and Sons who made several changes, including keyboard adjustments that resulted from the most common QWERTY key layout on computer keyboards.
In 1930 the simplified Dvorak keyboard was developed to be an alternative to the QWERTY keyboard as it requires less typing effort in some languages. However, the adhesion of manufacturers and users at that time was not significant.
The QWERTY keyboard is also used in certain models of cell phones to make it easier to write messages.
