On August 8th, an armed confrontation began between Russia and Georgia, which is motivated by the desire to annex the Republic of South Ossetia to their respective territories.
The Republic of South Ossetia covers an area of 3,900 km2 in which there are about 125,000 inhabitants.
Legally, the Republic in question integrates the territory of Georgia, that is why independence did not receive international support. Despite this, South Ossetia does not accept submitting to Georgia's domains.
The population of the Republic aspires to gain recognition of independence or join North Ossetia, established on Russian territory.
After proclaiming its independence in 1992, the atmosphere remained tense, as Georgia did not accept such an event.
On Friday August 8th, the Georgian government sent armed troops towards South Ossetia. Georgia's leaders accused the Russians of dropping bombs on planes located in their territory.
Shortly after Georgia's invasion of South Ossetia, the Russian government declared that the offensive would have retaliation, the Russian press released images of troops, armaments and tanks moving towards the location of the invasion.
International opinion was unanimous in agreeing that armed conflict must be put aside and that dialogue must be opened.
This focus is marked by accusations from both sides, Ossetia claims it has suffered genocide three times, Russia accuses Georgia of destroying the city and Georgia condemns aggressive Russian intervention.
