Activated charcoal (Carbo activatus): use and properties

Activated charcoal, whose botanical name is Carbo activatus, is prepared from controlled burning, with low oxygen content, of the woody parts of non-resinous angiosperms.

This substance is very porous, and has a great capacity to capture and retain, inside, toxic substances, impurities, microorganisms and gases from food decomposition intestinal; quickly. Thus, among its various applications, activated charcoal is widely used in natural medicine, in order to prevent or treat various ailments, such as poisoning, drug or food poisoning, problems related to the gastrointestinal system (such as diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, gas, bad breath, thrush and stomach pain) and jaundice (by adsorb¹ bilirubin). Some sources also indicate that activated mineral charcoal can help restore bone in cases of fractures and osteoporosis, reduce fatigue and stress, and treat tumors and ulcers.

Its use is generally made from the ingestion of capsules, or its granular content together with water or other liquids. In these cases, toxic substances, such as coal, are expelled from the body together with the faeces. In other situations, it is used externally, for example, in the treatment of wounds; superficial infections such as boils, hordeoli, and ulcers caused by smallpox; and to adsorb poison or other toxic substances from animals such as snakes, scorpions, spiders, wasps, bees and jellyfish.

Some records indicate that the use of this substance was already adopted in Ancient Egypt, both for medicinal purposes and for oil purification.

Important:

As it is an adsorbent substance, the use of charcoal must be suspended before using medications and/or nutritional supplements.
