The state of Tocantins is located in the geographic center of Brazil and integrates the Northern Region of the national territory. Its territorial extension is 277,621,858 square kilometers, divided into 139 municipalities. According to the population count carried out in 2010 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the population of Tocantins is 1,383,445 inhabitants.
Tocantins is the youngest state in Brazil, its creation took place after the dismemberment of the north of the state of Goiás, on October 5, 1988. After this process, there was an accelerated demographic growth in the state, driven by regional migratory flows.
The population of Tocantins is composed of immigrants from various parts of Brazil, the Indian also makes up the population contingent in the state. There are, in all, seven ethnic groups (Karajá, Xambioá, Javaé, Xerente, Krahô Canela, Apinajé and Pankararú), totaling approximately 10 thousand Indians, distributed in 82 villages.
Among the aspects inherent to the state of Tocantins, the quilombola communities also stand out, corresponding to approximately more than 15, which are home to thousands of people.


Palmas, the most populous city in Tocantins

Palmas, capital of Tocantins, is the city with the highest population concentration in the state, with 228,332 inhabitants. Other populous municipalities are: Araguaína (150,484), Gurupi (76,755), Porto Nacional (49,146), Paraíso do Tocantins (44,417), Araguatins (31,329).
Less than 20% of households have sewage collection, which is one of the lowest rates in the North Region. Infant mortality is 25.6 per thousand live births. The state's Human Development Index (HDI) is 0.756 and ranks 15th among Brazilian states.
