The rare appearance occurred in an area close to the river that runs through the Mãe Maria indigenous land, located in Bom Jesus do Tocantins (PA), in the vast Amazon Rainforest. In total, six species were found.

After a 10-day expedition in the region, researchers two ornithologists were discovered by the sighting of the bird, apparently as threat of extinction and transformed into a true rarity in the country.

The magnitude of the surprise was so great that professionals could hardly believe the discovery. Determined to document the feat, they captured images taken of the pinima curassow.

The bird's presence was meticulously recorded for more than 10 minutes, significant evidence of the unexpected encounter, according to ornithologist Gustavo Gonsioroski.

Environmental protection for the bird's permanence

The excitement generated by the discovery motivated the researchers to plan a return to the site next month, involving the search for other birds of the same species.

The researchers involved are part of the Territorial Action Plan for the Conservation of Endangered Species of the Meio Norte Territory (PAT Meio Norte).

The project is jointly coordinated by the Maranhão Department of the Environment (Sema), the Instituto Natureza do Tocantins (Naturatins) and the Institute for Forestry Development and Biodiversity of the State of Pará (Ideflor-Bio).

The main objective is to implement a management and protection policy, significantly contributing to the conservation of these birds at risk of extinction.

This collaboration between different institutions represents a joint effort to ensure the protection and preservation not only of this specific species, but also of other threatened species in the Mid-North region from the country.

It is the first time that six curassow birds have been seen since this species entered the endangered list.

The researchers were able to count on valuable information provided by indigenous people from the region, belonging to the Gavião Parkatejê ethnic group.

Furthermore, to improve their observation work, they used audio recorders and trap cameras, seeking to record both visual and sound aspects of these rare animals.
