Brazil in the G20 assumes the presidency: do you know what that means?

Brazil assumes the presidency of the G20 for the year 2024, today, December 1st.

The G20 presidency is rotary, that is, each year, a country belonging to the group assumes the presidency. In 2023, it was India's turn and in 2025 it will be South Africa.

The country holding the presidency becomes responsible for decide the G20 debate agenda. Brazil will focus its efforts on bringing issues such as combating inequality and hunger, reformulating international institutions in line with new geopolitics and sustainable development.

The expectation is that more than 100 meetings related to the G20 in Brazil, next year. One of the most important is the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government, on November 18th and 19th, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro.

What is the G20?

G20 is the acronym for the Group of 20. It is a forum for international economic cooperation, which has 19 countries and two international organizations, the European Union and the African Union (joined in 2023).

Together, these nations number about 85% of global GDP, more of 75% of global trade and around two-thirds of the world's population.

The G20 emerged in 1999 for economic leaders to debate the crisis that was emerging in Asia. However, it gained relevance and the participation of heads of state with the 2007 economic crisis and, in 2009, it was classified as the main forum for international economic cooperation.

At first, the group's focus was on issues essentially economic and financialHowever, as time went by, the debates became more comprehensive.

Currently, the institution is concerned with topics such as trade, sustainable development, health, agriculture, energy, environment, climate changes and combat corruption.
