Researchers have made an impressive archaeological discovery on the outskirts of the capital of Peru, Lime. At a recently excavated archaeological site, no fewer than 73 mummies were discovered. According to the archaeologists responsible for the discovery, the bodies are around 1,000 years old.
The preserved bodies were wrapped in various fabrics and ornaments. However, the most curious thing is that most of the mummies were buried with ritual masks carved from wood, which makes the origin of the corpses even more interesting.

Mummies were made by ancestors of the Incas
Also according to Peruvian archaeologists, the mummies found in Lima belong to the period in which the ancient Wari Empire was in force, which existed before the emergence of the Incas.
Just like the ancient egyptians
, this distinctive people is known for their mummies and peculiar funerary rituals, which involved human sacrifices and the use of hallucinogenic herbs. In fact, the site where the mummies were found is Pachacámac, which is close to the so-called Painted Temple, an ancient place of worship of the Wari. Created by the Wari, Pachacámac was also important for the Incas who later inhabited the region.
In addition to the 73 mummies, two wooden staffs were also found. One of them comes from a culture that was located north of the Wari empire, in what is now Ecuador. The other probably came from the kingdom of Tiwanaku, located south of the Wari lands.

Now, both the mummies and the staff found are going to places where they will be subjected to additional examinations and more detailed analyses.
