Webinar debates 'violence at school'

The ethical-cultural precariousness of the school; social polarization; precariousness of teaching work; forms of racism and prejudice; discrimination and censorship. Under these guidelines, the Ministry of Education (MEC) – through the Intersectoral Secretariat and education systems (Sase) – held, this Thursday (23), the 9th Meeting of the Webinar Cycle of the 2024 National Education Conference, whose central theme was “Violence and Intolerance at school”, broadcast on the MEC channel on Youtube.

When approaching studies regarding intolerance and violence in schools, and making prevention recommendations, the doctor in Education from State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and coordinator of the Group “Ethics, Diversity and Democracy in Public Schools”, at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Unicamp, Telma Vinha, emphasized that ‘school violence is directed directly at the school institution and those who do it. part of it’. Among the types of violence, she noted that they can range from incidents at school to violence that invades the school (such as extreme attacks, drug trafficking, etc.) or violence at school (through aggressive demonstrations or violent).

“We also have, within the school’s coexistence problems, what is called a disturbing manifestation. It is not violence, but it is what teachers mainly complain about, for example: mess, indiscipline, disobedience to rules. It cannot be considered violence, but it is something that disturbs, that disrupts the progress of the class and that disrupts the work of the content”, she said, commenting that, abroad, the recurring complaint is associated with coexistence problems, which hinders the quality of relations.

“It turns out that, in Brazil, our teachers and managers perceive these coexistence problems with greater intensity, compared to other countries that were part of, for example, Pisa [International Health Assessment Program] Students]. For our managers, indiscipline is the second factor that most hinders the functioning of schools”, added the doctor from Unicamp.

In addition to Telma, the Webinar was attended by federal deputy Jorge Goetten (PL-SC), who is part of the working group for the Policy to Combat Violence in Brazilian Schools of the Chamber of Deputies, with the moderator being the senior professor-researcher at the University of São Paulo (USP), Luiz Roberto Alves.
