Round 3: experts reveal when the next heat wave will be

In the last semester, Brazil went through four hot flashes. The last of them, recorded in November, was considered the most intense, being responsible for causing record temperatures in several Brazilian states. With the arrival of a new cold front, Brazilians are beginning to ask themselves: When will the next heat wave be??

According to meteorologist Celso Oliveira, it is still too early to give a deadline. However, the forecast indicates that temperatures will rise again between the 29th and 30th of November. “Not with the same intensity that we have seen in recent weeks. This is a direct – and already expected – impact of El Niño, mainly in the Southeast. This year, without a doubt, has been faster,” he said.

Summer 2023 will be hotter

With the arrival of heat planned for the turn of the month, the forecast is that rains will occur more regularly from December onwards. This way, the precipitation will make temperatures milder until the end of spring, which will happen on December 22nd. However, this year's summer will be even hotter.

“The summer, yes, will be hotter, including the possibility of new hot flashes, especially at the beginning of the season. This is because, besides the Pacific, all the oceans are warmer. The tendency is to increase the frequency and intensity of these phenomena”, warned the meteorologist.

For Alexandre Nascimento, from Nottus Meteorologia, El Niño is not the only thing responsible for the increase in temperatures. “The stacking of the phenomenon, with global warming and the high pressure system, which has already lost intensity, favored the atypical weather of recent weeks,” he explained.

Heat bubble intensifies temperatures

The heat bubble is a high pressure system that inhibits the formation of rain and clouds, blocking the passage of cold fronts coming from the southern region. “It continues to operate until December, with less strength, giving way to the presence of more clouds in the sky and, consequently, milder temperatures”, says Alexandre Nascimento.

However, the El Niño combined with the effects of global warming, it could cause a new heat wave in the country. The weather is expected to be milder at the end of summer, with heat peaks peaking between January and February. However, these will not be caused by a heat wave, occurring in a milder form and for fewer days.
