O Federal Supreme Court (STF) discussed again at the beginning of November regarding the correction of the amounts deposited in the Service Time Guarantee Fund (FGTS). The new judgment could practically double the income that workers currently have in FGTS accounts. As proposed by the case's rapporteur, Minister Luis Roberto Barroso, the idea is to establish a new format for reviewing income.

However, the analysis of the case was suspended due to a request for a review from Minister Cristiano Zanin. The view request is a device that increases the time for analyzing the process. In April of this year, Barroso proposed that FGTS income should be at least equal to that of the savings account.
On November 9, the minister changed his proposal and suggested that only new deposits be adjusted to the savings rate. Thus, the values already existing in the accounts are reinforced by
fund profits, transferred annually at the initiative of the Federal Government. From 2025, this distribution would become mandatory.Yields can double
With the FGTS review, around 117 million active accounts will benefit. However, this benefit will have a high cost to public coffers, estimated at R$8.6 billion over the next four years. According to Itaú BB, the approval of this measure could limit the resources allocated to the program by up to 30% My home, my life.
Currently the balance of FGTS accounts is adjusted by 3% per year plus the Reference Rate (TR), close to zero. In the case of savings, the current yield is 6.17% per year + TR. As reported by C6 Bank, a worker with a R$10,000 FGTS balance has an income of just R$498 at the end of a year with the current model.
If the change is approved by the STF, this income could be R$815 in the same period. For the worker who has R$20,000, the current profitability in 12 months is R$996. With the changes, this person would receive R$1,630 in the same period.
