The annual convention brought together franchisees, franchisors, suppliers and professionals from the franchise system on Ilha de Comandatuba, in Una, Bahia, last week.

During the event, Derek shared his incredible life journey and how he prepared to tackle one of the biggest and most challenging waves in the world in Nazaré, Portugal in 2017.

Derek Rabelo's story has its roots traced back to before his birth. Born in Guarapari, Espírito Santo, he is the son of a surfer and was named after Derek Ho, the renowned Hawaiian surfer.

The surfer's father could not have predicted that his son would be born with congenital glaucoma, which would end up stealing his vision. He is an inspiring example of overcoming and determination, proving that defying limitations can lead you to unexpected achievements.

Currently, the athlete has an impressive list of records in his career. He is recognized as the blind surfer who faced the biggest wave ever recorded to date, in Nazaré, Portugal.

He is also the only blind surfer to surf iconic spots like Pipeline in Hawaii and Teahupoo in Tahiti. His achievements in the world of surfing demonstrate remarkable determination and skill, defying expectations and inspiring others around the world.

3 ways to deal with difficulty

The three fundamental principles that Derek Rabelo highlights as crucial to his success:

  1. Persistence: consistency is essential for the surfer. Starting something and not following through will not bring results. How you start your day will influence what you achieve during the week or month. The energy with which you start the day is decisive for what you deliver. Don't think about giving up when you have a commitment to fulfill; dedicate yourself to it now.

  2. Initiative: Don't let opportunities pass you by. Some of them may be unique and never repeat. Seize the moment and act. Derek emphasizes the importance of taking action when circumstances and opportunities present themselves.

  3. Resilience: It is essential to be able to adapt to the changes and challenges that life presents. Naturally, we are adaptable to new paths and experiences, as long as we are willing to do so. It should be noted that resilience played a vital role in his quest to surf the big waves of Nazaré.

Derek Rabelo shares that he applied these three principles over three years to realize his dream of surfing the powerful waves of Nazaré.

He faced obstacles and adversities along the way, but his determination motivated him to overcome them and seek resilience as a fundamental quality in his life.

When asked how he felt after taking a big fall during his journey, Derek responded that these experiences taught him that resilience is a crucial attribute for success.
