Human rights activist wins Nobel Peace Prize 2023

Iranian Narges Mohammadi is the winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for being a human rights activist. The announcement was made today, October 6, by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Narges is a journalist and is considered the female voice of Iran, for fighting against the oppression of the regime in her country. She is currently in prison.

According to Berit Reiss-Andersen, chairman of the Nobel Committee, Narges Mohammadi is a defender of human rights and a person who fights for freedom.

"We want to support your courageous fight and recognize thousands of people who spoke out against the theocratic regime of repression and discrimination that targets women in Iran," said the president.

Nobel Prize of Peace

The Nobel Peace Prize awards people who are involved in social issues and, especially, in the movement for world peace. This award is granted by a committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget).

Some of the most famous Nobel Peace Prize winners were:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. (1964), which fought racial inequality,

  • Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1979): helped care for the poor and sick;

  • Nelson Mandela (1993): worked towards the peaceful end of the Apartheid regime and established the foundations for a new democratic South Africa;

  • Malala Yousafzai (2014): fought against the repression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.
