The introduction of Bill (PL) 3,942/2020, led by federal deputy Marcio Alvino (PL-SP), brought to light an important discussion in the scenario of traffic rules in Brazil.
The proposal, launched in July 2023, aims to modify the rules for drivers holding the driver's license category B, opening up the possibility of driving vehicles coupled to trailers with a total gross weight of up to six tons.

Currently, such drivers are only permitted to drive vehicles transporting up to 3,500 kg or motorhomes with a total weight of up to six tonnes.
The initiative, if approved, represents a significant expansion of options for drivers with a driver's license category B, but also raises important questions about road safety and the impact on regulations of Traffic.
The implementation of the proposal
Representative Alvino highlights an important point: many current pickup trucks weigh around 3 thousand kg. This makes the use of such vehicles with trailers within the current rules almost unfeasible.
If the PL is approved, it could, in fact, open up new possibilities for this group of drivers who use pickup trucks in their daily activities.
This could facilitate the transport of additional cargo or equipment, improving the specifics and usefulness of these vehicles.

The Specialized Committee on Roads and Transport of the Chamber of Deputies took an important decision by giving the green light to another similar PL, project 2.400/22.
This proposes an increase in the total gross weight allowed for drivers with a category B license to drive vehicles weighing up to 3,700 kg, thus extending the current limit of 3,500 kg and covering trucks, vans and trailers.
It is worth mentioning that the current weight limit (3,500 kg) is a global standard used to distinguish vans and pickup trucks (weighing below 3,500 kg) and trucks (weighing above this value).
Therefore, the change, if approved, will have a significant impact on the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) and vehicle regulation in Brazil.
