Two boys went through a life change and formed a great bond of friendship at the most unusual time. Waiting for a transplant meant that Rômulo and Cleverson formed a lifelong partnership and became “kidney brothers”.
While waiting for a transplant kidney disease at the Cajuru University Hospital, in Curitiba, Cleverson Meiras de Souza and Rômulo Messa Cardoso became great friends.

Both faced the same fear and saw that the connection between them was a positive way to share the new journey.
For Cleverson, the friendship was doubly important, as he was not from Curitiba and, although long awaited, his transplant required him to stay away from his city during his recovery.
The meeting of the “kidney brothers”
In August 2023, by fate, the two received organs from the same donor and, therefore, had to undergo the same procedures while waiting for the surgery.
For Rômulo, this connection with his friend was very important to face the fears and uncertainties of that moment. The partnership between them was an incentive for recovery and the possibility of making plans.
“I received a new chance to live and, at the same time, someone to share this journey of recovery with. A ‘kidney brother’ who soon became a friend to talk to, laugh and make plans”, emphasizes Rômulo.

An inseparable friendship
However, destiny or coincidences in their lives went beyond the day of the surgery. To be able to recover with due care, Cleverson, who lives in Foz de Iguaçu, would stay in Curitiba for three months.
Therefore, he had to look for a place in the city and, to everyone's surprise, he stayed in a house very close to Rômulo's residence. Such closeness after the surgery strengthened the bond of friendship.
“He spared no effort to help me, and, through this constant exchange of information and experiences daily, a true friendship is being consolidated that I know I will carry with me forever,” he said. Cleverson.
The great bond between the two was built during the important organ donation process. Brazil is a reference country for organ and tissue transplant surgeries.
In 2022, more than 26 thousand transplants were performed in the country, according to the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplantation (ABTO).
However, it is crucial that the number of organ donors increases in Brazil so that more people can have the same experience as the two friends who are now “kidney brothers”.
According to the Federal Government, the Donation in the country it is only carried out with the family's authorization. Therefore, it is essential to inform family members about your desire to become an organ donor and save lives.
