According to the report, those accused of such crimes take advantage of the complexity of current legislation to postpone maximum finality of criminal cases, making infractions outside the period of prescription.
Therefore, the project aims to combat this practice and ensure that crimes of corruption and money laundering do not go unpunished due to temporal limitations.
Project against corruption has a positive response in the Senate
The reading of the favorable opinion was led by Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS), representing rapporteur Esperidião Amin (PP-SC). The initiative, proposed by senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES), is advancing in its legislative journey.
After approval by the Senate Public Security Committee (CSP), the PL will proceed to analysis by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ). If approved by this, the proposal will go directly to analysis in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies.

Senator Marcos do Val, author of the PL, highlights that corruption cases often fall to the STF, the last instance of Justice Brazilian government, after a series of legal appeals, which can be interpreted as a strategy for the corrupt to avoid debt and get away with it.
Reviewing multiple appeals throughout the court process often lengthens the time it takes for a case to finally be concluded.
Therefore, there is a risk that, due to limitations on statutes of limitations, corruption crimes may be pardoned before a sentence is handed down.
