How did construction begin?

This story begins in August 1978, when Oberto Airaudi, who was an insurance broker and artist and later adopted the name Falco Tarassacose, brought together 28 people.

They undertook a secret undertaking, excavating a mountain at night. Sixteen years passed before completion was reached, resulting in the creation of the largest underground structure in the world.

Over this period, the Damanhur volunteer group saw its numbers gradually grow, reaching 800 members by the year 2000.

Built from materials such as stone, wood and glass, the temples were decorated with a profusion of sculptures, murals, frescoes and mosaics.

The first one among them, called the Hall of Mirrors, was designed in honor of light, air, the sky and the sun. The Temples of Humanity house a series of distinct spaces, each with a unique theme.

The Hall of Waters celebrates divine feminine forces, while the Hall of Earth consists of two circular rooms with solar tones.

The Hall of Metals has eight windows made of precious metals. The centerpiece, the Room of Spheres, is covered in gold leaf and precedes the Labyrinth, which tells the iconic story of humanity.

The Blue Temple, which is the first, was carved by hand with hammers and chisels. For the first 15 years, this creation remained a secret due to the absence of Italian laws allowing private underground constructions.

However, the secret came to light in 1992, when the site was raided by a state prosecutor who threatened to blow up the hillside with dynamite.

However, the commotion turned into admiration upon witnessing the cameras, resulting in deep emotions. Today, the “Temples of Humanity” play a fundamental role as a tourist attraction in Italy.
