Meaning of Yeshua (What It Is, Concept and Definition)

Yeshua is a term of Hebrew root which means "to save” or "salvation". It is considered by some scholars as the original name of Jesus Christ written in Hebrew. However, it is a topic under discussion, since the language spoken in the land where Jesus dwelt was Aramaic.

Some religious believe that using the original name "Yeshua" to refer to Jesus would be correct. However, studies on the etymology of the term and its evolution from Hebrew show how changes occurred in the proper name.

In fact, Yeshua is an abbreviated form of Yehoshua, a Hebrew name that was translated into Portuguese as Joshua. "Yeoshua" means "the Eternal saves". In a certain biblical story, the figure of Joshua appears as the successor of Moses in the mission to lead the people of Israel to the land of Canaan.

The name referring to Jesus, the Savior, appears written in the Bible, sometimes as Yeshua, sometimes as Yehoshua.

In the Greek translations of the Old Testament of the Bible, the transliteration of the names “Yeshua” and “Yehoshua” for the unique name “Iesous”, which was translated into Latin as “Iesus” and into Portuguese as "Jesus".

Yeshua Hamashia is an Aramaic expression meaning "Jesus Christ the Messiah".

There are several songs written by various artists and bands that are dedicated to Jesus and contain the word Yeshua.
