Secretaries ask MEC to postpone changes to the New High School

Not now, but only from the 2025 school year. This was the main request forwarded by the state secretaries of Education, this Monday (21), which asked the Ministry of Education to extend the initial deadline for adapting the changes proposed by the New High school.

“Any change to be implemented requires a feasible transition period”, argued, on the occasion, the group, considering that, “even that the new educational modality and the respective curricular regulations have already been adopted by the Brazilian states, eventual changes would imply further adjustments, which becomes unfeasible for the 2024 school year, whose planning has already begun in light of the legislation in effect”.

Among the modifications proposed by MEC for this level of education, implemented after public consultation, we highlight for the resumption of the minimum 2,400 hours of basic general training, surpassing the previous minimum quota of 1,800 hours. In this case, the secretaries defend that the duration should be 2,100 hours, not counting another 900 vacancies employed on the basis of training itineraries, enabling the provision of Professional and Technical Education, through the use of distance education (ead). For that student who, at the same time, dedicates himself to a technical course, lasting between 800 hours and 1,000 hours, the general training required would be 2,200 hours.

States, in turn, also claim to have greater autonomy in defining their own training itineraries, renamed by the portfolio of 'paths for deepening and integrating studies'. On the occasion, the MEC proposed the reduction, from five to three, of the itineraries: Languages, Mathematics and Natural Sciences; Languages, Mathematics and Human and Social Sciences; and Technical and Professional Training. For a number of educators, the ministry should take a more focused stance on regulating the diversified part of the curriculum.

The proposals were presented in the document signed by the president of the National Council of Education (CNE), Luiz Roberto Liza Curi, by the president of the Council National Secretary of Education (CNSE), Vitor de Angelo, and by the president of the National Forum of State and District Education Councils, Ricardo Tonassi.

With the end of the deadline, this Monday (21), for the educational sector and regulatory bodies to send their considerations on the proposal presented by the MEC, it will be up to the folder to consolidate the proposals in the final version of the report, for subsequent submission to Congress National.
