Man used meteorite as door stopper in US for 30 years; understand the case

In a rather unusual case, a man in the US used a large meteorite as a door weight for over 30 years. However, after finding out what the stone really was, the man decided to sell the item for a value very high.

David Mazurek led an ordinary life on his farm, with the exception of the fact that he had a rather unusual door weight. According to him, the stone was used for approximately three decades as a door weight for one of his sheds.

However, the most shocking thing is that man already knew that it was not a common stone, but a meteorite, mainly due to its appearance.

In 2018, Mazurek finally decided to take the stone for assessment of the object's origin to Mona Sirbescu, a geologist at Central Michigan University.

What did the expert say?

The geologist, identified by her last name Sirbescu, said: “I could tell right away that this was something special. It is the most valuable specimen I have ever had in my life, monetary and scientifically.” In short, the specialist only confirmed that the item really was a meteorite, and not a

stone common.

David Mazurek, reaffirmed that he already knew that it was a rare object, because, when buying it, in 1988, the former owner told his story. According to David, the original seller reported that the “rock” fell overnight onto his property in the 1930s when they decided to move it into the shed.

“Edmore Meteorite” sold for more than R$ 370 thousand

The item was named "Edmore" after its sale, however the process was only carried out after Mazurek discovered that it could be worth a lot of money.

According to the information, the Edmore ended up being sold to the Abrams Planetarium, at Michigan State University, for the amount of US$ 75 thousand, the equivalent of more than R$ 370 thousand.

Still involving the case of the rare item, Sirbescu highlighted that: “What usually happens to them at this moment is that the meteorites can be sold and displayed in a museum or sold to collectors and sellers looking to obtain profit".
