A Meteor rain Perseids of 2023 presented us with a magnificent show last weekend, reaching its peak around 1:30 am on Sunday (13), Brasilia time.

Traditional for this time of year, the Perseid meteor shower has been active since July 17th and will continue until the end of August.

This phenomenon occurs when Earth crosses the path of particles left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, located in the constellation Perseus. These fragments pass through the atmosphere of the planet, creating the celestial spectacle that we admire.

Brazilian average

In Brazil, the expected average was 25 to 30 meteors per hour, depending on the sky observation conditions in each region.

However, despite the collaboration of the Moon this year, which was in the waning phase with only 5% luminosity, the records fell short of expectations.

According to Marcelo Zurita, president of the Paraibana Association of Astronomy (APA) and technical director of the Brazilian Meteor Observation Network (Bramon), the meteor shower, which should be one of the biggest of the year, did not reach the predictions expected by observers Brazilians.
