We have witnessed a steady increase in sale of puppies of domestic animals, which, unfortunately, also feeds the illegal market.

In this scenario, often bitches, cats and females of other species are seen being exploited for reproductive purposes, with no regard for their welfare.

This callous practice gains a worrying focus in the pet trade, and this is exactly what the new legislation aims to address and restrict.

In this sense, a decision taken unanimously by the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp), marked a significant step in the protection of domestic animals.

The new legislation imposes a strict ban on the sale of animals in pet shops and through online platforms.

The central motivation behind this measure is to safeguard the well-being of the dogs, cats and birds that share our homes and lives.

A notable aspect of the law is the introduction of the State Registry of Animal Breeders (Ceca). This system is designed to regulate the sale of pets, creating a more controlled and responsible approach.

With the implementation of Ceca, the sale of pets will be restricted to registered breeders only, offering an additional guarantee that the animals come from legitimate and well-managed sources.

The introduction of a specific registry for breeding sites, intended to group the establishments properly authorized for the sale of animals, is a fundamental measure to combat the persistent crime of mistreatment.

The rationale behind this proposal is quite solid: by restricting sales to registered locations, it is possible to undermine illegal activities that often result in inhumane treatment and harmful to animals.

With the approval, the bill now awaits the final decision of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who will be responsible for sanctioning or vetoing it.
