“We are willing, here, to provide all assistance to these children who need, above all, new literacy methods. We have a Secretariat for Literacy at MEC, which we will make available for specific projects aimed at children who are being literate in Spanish, Portuguese and in the native language", explained the minister.
Ricardo Vélez Rodríguez is part of the interministerial delegation that makes the first official trip since taking office. The objective is to understand how the process of arrival of immigrants in Brazil works and to verify the services that can be taken or improved for these people. According to the minister, the MEC must provide services to citizens where they need them.
In addition, the minister says that the reports he is receiving from the refugees are of “welcoming and kindness” on the part of the Armed Forces. “On the other hand, I am seeing the pressing needs of children with regard to their literacy. We at MEC want to make true what President Jair Bolsonaro said from the beginning: ‘more Brazil, less Brasília’”, highlighted Ricardo Vélez. “We will serve the citizen where he lives, that is, in the municipality. We certainly want to help children who are of school age and who are living in a specific situation.”
Operation
Operation Acolhida was launched by the federal government in early March 2018 to act in the humanitarian crisis caused by the migratory wave from Venezuela. The work is coordinated by the Army's Humanitarian Logistics Task Force. The work is carried out jointly by federal, state and municipal bodies. Upon arriving in the country, refugees are welcomed with assistance measures, such as food distribution, improvements in shelter conditions and health support.
According to Defense Minister General Fernando Azevedo e Silva, the number of refugees arriving in the country continues to be between 500 and 700 a day. Upon arrival, the Venezuelans pass through the first screening point in Pacaraima. From there, they head to shelters. It is estimated that more than 4.5 people have been welcomed.
“We hope that the situation in Venezuela returns to democratic normality and that will cool down what is happening here. In the meantime, we will continue with the operation and welcome with great affection and heart these Venezuelan brothers who are looking for a better life in Brazil”, said the Minister of Defense.
