American Embassy takes 50 Brazilian students for exchange

Are you a high school student in a public school, do you speak English and promote relevant activities in your community? How about spending three weeks in the United States, getting to know social projects, schools, as well as taking a little bit of Brazil to that country? This is the purpose of the Young Ambassadors Program.

Held by the US Embassy, ​​the program opened registration this Tuesday (19) for this year's edition. The exchange lasts for three weeks and will select 50 students from Brazilian public schools who are between 15 and 18 years old, leaders in idealized jobs in their communities, especially, volunteering.

To participate, in addition to age and education, the candidate must master the language, in addition to the following requirements:

  • minimum participation of one year in volunteering
  • have no or little experience abroad, which is less than 20 days
  • never traveled to the United States
  • be communicative
  • have a leadership profile and initiative
  • have excellent school performance

Applications can be made until August 12 using the form available at Program Page on Facebook. If approved, the candidate must attach the requested documentation and select the partner institution that is closest to their residence to forward their application.

Program Steps

First, the candidate registers on the stipulated date. After completing the form, the participant will receive an automatic response informing if he fits the program requirements to proceed to the second stage. In this case, you will be informed about the procedures.

Then, until August 26th, you must complete the form, select the institution to send the documentation and forward it. At the end, a message will appear saying that the process was completed successfully and that the material is in the database for review by the selected institution.

Until September 5th, the institutions will access the documentation sent, review the material and indicate whether the candidate has been selected for the next phase, consisting of the written test. This will be applied on the 14th of the same month, in Brasilia. Those approved will take the oral test until September 30th.

During this period, the institutions will visit the candidates' homes and, from there, will select the finalists. After the entire final stage, the 50 winners will depart for the United States on January 11th of the next year, returning on February 3rd. Remembering that, in this process, they will receive help in the preparation of the documentation.

How the program works

The duration of the exchange is three weeks. During the first week, they get to know Washington, the US capital, and its main monuments. There, they participate in meetings with public and private sector organizations, visit schools and social projects and participate in workshops on youth leadership and entrepreneurship.

Afterwards, participants are divided into groups that travel to different states where they are welcomed by host families. During this time, they attend local schools and interact with students of the same age, participating in social and cultural responsibility activities, giving presentations about Brazil.

The Young Ambassadors Program is a partnership between the US Embassy and the National Council of Secretaries of Education (CONSED), the State Secretariats of Education, the network of Brazil-United States Binational Centers and private companies such as Canal Futura and IBM.
