See what are the rules used to form the acronyms of Brazilian states:
- In states with a compound name, the formation of the abbreviation uses the initial of the two names (Ex: Espírito Santo – ES, Distrito Federal – DF and São Paulo – SP);
- In cases where there was already a state with that initials, there was differentiation by other criteria (Ex: Mato Grosso – MT) and Mato Grosso do Sul – MS);
- The abbreviation of states with the same name, in different regions of the country, takes into account the location (eg Rio Grande do Sul – RS and Rio Grande do Norte – RN);
- In states whose name consists of only one word, the first two are used (Ex: Goiás – GO, Acre – AC and Bahia – BA);
- In cases where there was already a state with an abbreviation resulting from this process, other resources were used (Ex: Roraima – RR, Amapá – AP and Paraíba – PB).
