To determine whether the popular saying is true, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between the coat color of cats of three colors, genes and chromosomes.
Although it seems like a complicated combination, the story can be explained! Follow here.
Understand if three-color cat will always be female
The characteristics of the cat are determined by genetic inheritance, that is, it comes from the father and mother of the pet. According to veterinarian Mayra Susenko, chromosomes contain the genetic material. In addition, different genes are present on the chromosomes.
Like humans, the tricolor cat also carries the genes and chromosomes of its parents.
Therefore, coat color is a trait of dominant genes. As the veterinarian explains in the following example, from the Canal do Pet portal:
“There are dominant genes, such as, for example, W, which determines the white color and which doesn't need two equals (W/W) to express itself. For example, one feline that has a W gene will be white regardless of whether its genetics are W/w or W/W – and regardless of whether it is XX (female) or XY (male).”
With regard to tricolor cats, most will be female due to the lack of W chromosomes in the coloring. Thus, it is established that the X chromosomes are responsible for the color of the pet.
In this case, the X determines the colors orange or black, if the genetic heritage has an orange X chromosome and a black X, the cat can be brindle. If you have a white spot gene (S), the cat will have three colors.
Because of this genetic relationship, a three-color male cat is a rarity, but it can happen in a genetic anomaly. An estimated 1% of tricolor cats are male.
