American film star born in Winnetka, Illinois, with a private life that was very troubled by his homosexual behavior. The son of a mechanic and an operator who divorced when he was eight, he was raised by his mother. After graduating from high school, he worked as a mailman and was a Navy mechanic during World War II. Returning to civilian life, he worked as a truck driver until he was convinced to pursue a career artistic in Hollywood by a shrewd agent who saw in his height and in his eyes a future promising.
He made a small appearance in Fighter Squadron (1948) and changed his name, then Roy Fitzgerald after his mother's remarriage, to Rock Hudson, at the suggestion of his agents. Her career effectively took off with acting in Westerns and Doris Day comedies such as Lover Come Back, Send Me No Flowers and Pillow Talk. He was married to Phyllis Gates (1955-1958), his agent's secretary, Henry Wilson, in an attempt to save his heartthrob career from rumors that he was gay.
After an intense life as an actor, as shown in the filmography below, he passed away in Beverly Hills, California, affected by the AIDS virus, acquired in their sexual practices and diagnosed a few years before (1980). He was nominated for an Oscar only once (1957) for best actor in Giant, but won the Golden Globe four times (1959/1960/1961/1963).
