The Swedish study included 45 young volunteers, with an average age of 25 years. They underwent tests that used tracking software to map their eye movements as they interacted with other people.
Prior to the experiment, participants were required to spend a night awake without sleep. In the second phase, they were allowed to sleep for eight hours before being followed up the next day, and the result couldn't be more surprising.
What was the result of the survey?
When comparing the results, the scientists saw a drop of between six and twelve percent in the time that the volunteers took to fix their attention on other people's faces after a bad night sleep.
When asked to rate people's faces after a sleepless night, participants were more critical of their appearance. Negative perceptions were also evident, such as that faces were less trustworthy.
