New Identity Card is now issued with only the CPF

The new National Identity Card (CIN) began to be issued on July 26th and brings changes to the document. The main one is the extinction of the General Registry (RG). Now, the identification of the citizen will be unique, based on the number in the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF), valid throughout the national territory.

The change provided for in Decree No. 10,977, of February 23, 2022, establishes the new rules for issuing the identity document. Among them, the adoption of the CPF as a single registration for the entire country. Today, only the state of Rio Grande do Sul can issue the new document.

In the evaluation of the Ministry of Justice, in the coming days, the new identity will also be issued in the states of Acre, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná and the Federal District. The other states still do not have an established schedule for issuing the new model, but, for the agency, they have until March 2023 to start.

De-bureaucratization and fight against fraud

With the measure, the Federal Government seeks to reduce the bureaucracy in issuing the document, as well as to unify the citizen's identification number throughout the national territory, with the aim of reducing cheats.

This is because, so far, the RG number is different in each state of the federation, and, in practice, a person can have two or more numbers. The CPF, on the other hand, is unique throughout Brazil, which will allow public bodies to consult citizens' data in a unique way.

Digital version and QR Code

In addition to the extinction of the RG number, the Decree implements other novelties, such as the possibility of the new identity being issued in a digital version. The physical format is still valid and will be printed on paper money, with a watermark on the coat of arms of the Republic in the image of the national territory.

To validate the authenticity of the digital document, the new identity has a QR Code. The reading can be done by any smartphone and offers other information, such as consulting a possible theft or loss of the wallet.

CPF must be regularized

In order to issue a new National Identity Card, citizens must keep their information up to date with the Federal Revenue Service. In consultation with Revenue website it is possible to correct, regularize and update data.
