But, after all, what is the difference between social distancing/isolation, lockdown and quarantine? Check it out here!

What is the lockdown?

lockdownit is a situation where people have their movement impeded due to an emergency. The term was commonly used to refer to situations requiring some form of access blocking or isolation, for example a bomb threat.

O lockdown is the next step of the isolation measures, with even more severity. When adopted, the population can only leave the house to carry out essential services for survival. If this is not complied with, there may be a police force.

In addition, some areas may be completely cordoned off, there may be roadblocks and traffic control.

Faced with the coronavirus pandemic, countries such as China, the United States, Italy and Spain have decreed lockdown when cases skyrocketed.

Other countries, such as New Zealand, opted for the measure in advance. In the case of this one, it already registers one of the lowest mortality rates by Covid-19.

O lockdown it also integrates one of the “non-pharmacological measures” recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health. This is necessary, as there are still no vaccines or medications that prevent coronavirus contagion and mortality.

In the case of Brazil, since May 5th, the population of the city of Maranhão will only be able to leave their homes for services considered essential, such as food, medicine or medical assistance.

What is quarantine?

A Quarantine refers to social distancing, which can be milder or more extreme, depending on the context. This measure aims to separate and restrict the access or movement of people who have been, or may have been, exposed to contagious diseases.

The purpose of quarantine is to understand if people are sick and to prevent further spread. The term appeared in the middle of the fourteenth century, in Venice (Italy), during the bubonic plague. This was the deadliest pandemic in history and killed between 50 and 200 million people.

Currently, the adoption of medical quarantines is common. In the current coronavirus pandemic, many people use the term quarantine as a synonym for social distancing or physical isolation.

What is social isolation?

O social isolation, in turn, consists of the practice of separating sick people from those who are healthy. Those who isolate themselves outside the hospital must stay at home and separate from other family members.

The preference is to use a room in the house for the isolation of the individual. Currently, the term can also be used to refer to the practice of staying at home and avoiding contact with other people, even if there is no focus of the disease in the group or nearby.

What is social distancing?

O social distancing, or physical distancing, is a measure aimed at the space between people who are in circulation. Through distancing, those who leave their homes must maintain a minimum distance between other people.

The measure is one of the most important to avoid contagion, especially the new coronavirus. The Ministry of Health (MS) classifies these actions in two ways:

  • Extended Social Distancing (DSA)
  • Selective Social Distancing (DSS)

DSS has milder actions. When employed, only people from the group of risk are isolated, while the rest of the population lives normally, but everyone must follow safety and hygiene protocols.

The DSA, on the other hand, is more severe and includes the closure of schools and establishments, as well as the ban on gatherings and the stoppage of most economic activity that is not considered essential.

Through this last measure, the population is advised to stay at home and only go out for essentials.
