Despite all the warnings, on average 57% of the daily calories consumed by Americans come from ultra-processed foods. In some risk groups, where consumption would be even less advised, it approaches 80%.

The terms of the food industry are unclear. We see homemade, light, natural, organic and many other foods, but sometimes the nomenclature ends up making the choice even more difficult for citizens who did not have access to certain acquaintances. On the other hand, it is common knowledge that added sugars are unhealthy.

Does having sugar in the product already indicate that the food is processed? Most of the time, yes.

What are these ultra-processed foods?

As hard as it seems to define what they are, a good indicator is to evaluate how many ingredients were added to change the natural state of the food. According to the Harvard Medical School, theoretically any change in food made by adding items makes the product processed.

The biggest problem is when this procedure is exaggerated, that is, there is the addition of a lot of fat, sugar, salt, dyes or preservatives. The food becomes ultra-processed, which makes it very harmful to the health.

Some lightly processed foods, such as fresh bread, tomato sauce, cheese and peanut butter, for example, are less harmful, although they also have some additives, either to boost the flavor, texture or even to increase the validity.

And even though it may have become obvious what ultra-processed foods are, we can give you examples: the famous snacks, also known as chips, are not good for the body; frozen meals; some cold ones with a lot of added salt or dyes; fast food foods with lots of preservatives; artificial dyes in general; sugar and salt when added to food.

Pay attention to shopping and avoid consuming these options as much as possible.
