O International Women's Day takes place March 8th. There are many ways to celebrate this holiday. However, they all have a similar goal: to raise awareness of women's struggles.
Women's Day was first celebrated on February 28, 1909, in New York. Two years later, German Luise Zietz proposed that the holiday become an annual event that celebrates various women's issues.

Among the discussions were suffrage and the promotion of equal rights for women. The first Women's Days were celebrated in a very different way than today, with hundreds of demonstrations across Europe.
During these demonstrations, women demanded that they finally be given the right to vote and hold public office. Sex discrimination in employment was also a major issue.
In 1917, Women's Day demonstrations in St. Petersburg, Russia, helped start the February Revolution, when women marched through the city demanding an end to World War I.
This shocked even Leon Trotsky, who, like other Russian leaders, had not expected the Women's Day protests to cause such a stir. Until 1977, Women's Day was celebrated mainly in few countries.
It was only after the decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations to proclaim March 8 as International Women's Day that the holiday gained worldwide popularity.
