There are up to 16 types of sleep, study points out; See what they are

A recent study published in the journal PNAS points out what are the types of sleep more common. According to scientists, the variation is due to difficulties that some people may experience at bedtime. In this way, the last moments of our day count a lot for the quality of sleep of each person.

In addition, they can present unique characteristics of the lifestyle that each person leads. Therefore, work, studies, diet, state of health and many other variables exist when considering the factors that approximate or distance the body from relaxation.

Study details

The study was conducted in the United Kingdom and was based on observational data from a multi-person study. Thus, it was possible to perceive a pattern of movement of the arms, legs, as well as eyelids and other parts of the body during the moment of sleep. With this, the scientists were able to map some of the main movements and associate them with neurological factors.

Through these data, it was noted that there are some sleeps that are lighter, while others are more intense and deeper. In addition, it was also noticed that the type of routine a person takes says a lot about how he will sleep. For example, people who work late at night and need to sleep in the morning or afternoon have a very different sleep cycle than those who sleep at night. In these cases, it is possible to notice a deeper sleep, which signals someone's tiredness after a full night of work.

In addition, each person's practices before going to sleep also show results on sleep quality. The study was able to observe that people who prepare for the night have more positive results when waking up. But the opposite happens to those who fail to prepare for the night.

The 16 types of sleep

The study categorized the types of sleep into types and subtypes that could be perceived through monitoring. In addition, interviews were conducted with those who participated in the test, in order to be able to map the results of this sleep on our health. And so, scientists mapped the following types of sleep:

  • Insomnia, long-lasting and interrupted sleep;
  • Sleeping at unusual times as a result of work
  • Interrupted and short-lived sleep;
  • Insomnia, sleep of “normal” duration;
  • Insomnia with short duration sleep;
  • Deep sleep, but it takes time to arrive;
  • Quick naps;
  • Sleep that lasts too long;
  • Sleep only during the day;
  • Sleep only at night;
  • Difficulty staying asleep;
  • Sleep that happens in fragments;
  • Complete sleep;
  • Falling asleep quickly without difficulty waking up;
  • Sleep-wake cycle out of sync with biologically determined schedules, atypical cases;
  • Long-lasting all-night sleep, no need for daytime naps.
