Alfredo d Escragnolle Taunay

Brazilian writer born in Rio de Janeiro, who was also a military engineer and army officer, painter and musician, journalist and literary and political critic. He studied Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the Escola Militar and participated in the Paraguayan War and other military campaigns. He entered political life and exercised important political activity, as Deputy, Senator of the Empire and President of the Provinces of Santa Catarina and Paraná, until he turned away from politics when the Republic was proclaimed and died in Rio de January.
He projected himself in the literary world mainly thanks to the novels A Retreat da Laguna, written in French, and Inocência (1872), a regionalist novel and considered to be his masterpiece. In the field of musicology, his most important works were several studies on the musical work of Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia and Carlos Gomes. He was chosen as Patron of Chair no. 17 of the Brazilian Academy of Music (See Villa-Lobos).
In poetry, his main publications were Pedra do Sono (1942), O Engenheiro (1945), Psychology of Composition, Fable of Angion and Antiode (1947), O Cão sem Plumas (1945), O Rio (1954), Dois Águas, Morte e Vida Severina, Landscapes with Figures and One Knife Only (1956), Quaderna (1960), Dois Parliaments (1961), Third Fair (1961), Education through Stone (1966), Complete Poetry (1940-1965 and 1968), Museum of Everything (1976), School of Knives (1981); Serial, Before and After, A Educação pela Pedra (1997), as well as prose texts weaving thoughts on the Poet Sleeping (1950) and Joan Miró (1950).
