Bacon may be as carcinogenic as cigarettes

No doubt you've noticed that in American movies and TV shows breakfast is high in calories, sugar and fat. One of the most striking foods on the plate is the bacon, usually served with eggs. However, after several studies, it was concluded that including this food in the first meal of the day is as carcinogenic as smoking cigarettes.

A World Health Organization (WHO) declared that bacon has as much carcinogenic potential as cigarette. Let's be honest, he's not the only one on the WHO list, as the organization warns of the dangers of all processed meat.

What makes processed meats potentially carcinogenic?

If consumed an amount of 50g of any processed meat every day, the WHO warns about the increase in the risk of bowel cancer by 18% over the years. Furthermore, there are estimates from studies that suggest that consumption of these foods will potentially kill around 34,000 people each year.

Companies include elements, which were not present in the original form of the product, to enhance the flavor, through smoking, salting and curing, for example. In addition to these processes and salt, nitrates and nitrites are also added.

Our body even understands and recognizes substances such as nitrates and nitrites. For example, part of the nitrate is eliminated in the urine and the rest helps to form saliva. Nitrite is associated with diseases caused by failures in hemoglobin (protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood). However, what happens is that nitrites generate another substance called nitrosamine, which is highly carcinogenic.

Replace bacon with better options

It is worth mentioning that there are alternatives for those who like this fat. These options may not be as tasty as the original, but you can eat with less guilt and it will taste good.

Nutritionists suggest experimenting with alternatives to bacon, such as those from Tempê (tempeh) or mushrooms. These are options that simulate the pork flavor present in bacon and can also be very crispy.

In addition, bacon from turkey is an excellent option to leave pork bacon aside, especially for those who are predisposed to cancer of colon. This is because this type of bacon contains less heme iron (which can increase the formation of carcinogenic compounds).
