For forty years, the terrorist group ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom) has been seeking political and territorial independence. The Basque people fight for a territory that lies in northeastern Spain and southwestern France.
During four decades of the group's activities, approximately 800 people were murdered. ETA's violent actions distance separatist yearnings, even with the lack of public opinion support, the attacks continue, always violent and directed at authorities, such as police, journalists, businessmen, military among others.
The actions do not have justifiable causes, considering that the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country enjoys privileges, such as applying its tax laws and also collecting taxes, inserting the study of the Basque language into the school curriculum, in addition to having government representatives in parliament and a president. These rights please the population, who see them as sufficient and respond to Basque wishes. However, the ETA group is still not satisfied with the conquered rights.
Only 30% of the Basque population supports the independence struggle. ETA is the only terrorist group in Europe today. Despite the end of the actions of the IRA group, in Northern Ireland, the ETA, although weakened, continues to carry out attacks.
