Despite the rise of the C class in the last decade, people who are part of it are not the majority in Brazil – and won't be for a long time. Still according to the projection, the poorest Brazilians, from classes D and E, will continue to make up more than half of the population until, at least, 2024.

In 2022, 50.7% of households in the country earn up to R$ 2,900, a better number than in 2021, 51.3%. While these are the majority, the richest are a minority of the population: only 2.8% of Brazilians earn more than R$22,000 a month and belong to class A.

In turn, the middle class comprises around 33.3% of the Brazilian population, according to Tendências Consultoria.

What is the middle class?

By salary, the middle class, or class C, has the average income of the Brazilian population. These are people who generally depend exclusively on income from work (formal or informal).

In addition, it is a group of people who are more economically vulnerable, since they are at the bottom of the income pyramid. They are Brazilians who have a certain purchasing power and a reasonable standard of living. They manage to meet basic needs and have fun, but not as much as classes A and B.

How much do I have to earn to be middle class?

There is not exactly a consensus on this. According to the classification of Tendências Consultoria, the monthly income of the middle class is between R$ 2.9 thousand and R$ 7.1 thousand. However, according to the Center for Social Policies of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (CPS/FGV), these people's earnings range from R$2,284 to R$9,847 per month.
