The ‘millions’ drink

According to a local newspaper, the hotel sells around 1,000 of these unique drinks a day during peak holiday periods, totaling a daily value of $29,000.

However, it is important to note that this price does not include service fees and taxes, bringing the estimated value to SGD 46, around US$ 34.

The Singapore Sling was created in 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon in the hotel's famous Long Bar and is widely considered the country's national drink, according to the Raffles Hotel website.

Served in a tall glass garnished with a slice of pineapple, the cocktail is made with gin, pineapple, lemon juice, curacao and benedictine.

It also receives a touch of grenadine and cherry liqueur, giving the drink a light pink hue, a color chosen purposely by the bartender.

At that time, etiquette rules stated that it was unacceptable for women to consume alcohol in public.

Instead, they used to drink tea or fruit juice. Ngiam saw an opportunity to create a cocktail that could be disguised as a simple cocktail drink. fruit, but which actually contained alcohol, allowing women to enjoy it in public without judgments.

Even after all these years, the Singapore Sling is widely known and has been the subject of many online recipe recreations.

In May, a user of TikTok shared his opinion on the drink, stating that the drink itself is not worth the dollars spent, but the historical experience itself makes up for it.

The Raffles Hotel is also known for another unique and rather curious tradition: guests are given peanuts and encouraged to throw the shells on the floor.

While there are strict rules about littering in Singapore, including fines of up to $1,000, the hotel's website notes that this is the only place littering is "encouraged".
