A doubt that hangs around in the minds of many people is whether those who are not carrying out an activity paid can contribute to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), but the answer is simple: yes. In these cases, the contribution is considered optional, but still needs to be made monthly through a Social Security Guide (GPS). Anyone who is unemployed, students and housewives, for example, may be considered an “optional contributor”. Another valid point is that you also need to be over 16 to start contributing. It is important to say here that the list is much longer.

Contributions to be made on a monthly basis are calculated on the minimum wage, which is currently worth R$ 1,212, up to a maximum INSS ceiling of R$ 7,087.22. The person interested in contributing can choose between three different rates: 5%, 11% and 20%. Depending on how much your monthly income is and the option chosen, you will only be entitled to retirement by age or also by contribution time.

How to pay

It's quite simple. Just access the INSS website, as there you will be able to find the step-by-step instructions for filling out the Social Security Guide. In this tab, the taxpayer needs to put the respective INSS payment code.

The NIT/PIS/Pasep number of the person making the contribution is also required. If he does not have this number yet, he will need to register with the INSS so that he can obtain the Worker Registration Number (NIT). This GPS can be generated by the application that is available for Android and iOS or in My INSS.

In cases of delay, it is possible to pay the guides that have not expired within a maximum period of six months. After this expiration date, the taxpayer loses his status as an insured person and also loses access to INSS benefits. If it is still within six months after the due date, just issue the GPS with the interest linked to the calculation.
