Streaming platform growth

The streaming platform market has grown a lot in the last two years. As a result, the number of downloads and searches for these apps increased by 300%. In addition, according to a survey carried out by the MPA (Motion Pictures Association), in 2020 alone, subscriptions to streaming services increased by 26%, ending the year with 1.1 billion subscriptions.

However, it wasn't just the search for streaming that increased, but the supply as well. The number of existing platforms grows every day, making the consumer make choices when signing up. In view of this, some strategies are devised by the platforms to offer cheaper plans and have greater membership.

In this sense, on Amazon Prime, the Prime account entitles you not only to streaming services, but also to other benefits, such as free shipping on purchases through Amazon. Another example is that in Brazil, Netflix offers cheaper subscriptions, in which the video quality is not as good as the more expensive ones, a measure also taken by HBO Max. However, in the case of the latter, this type of subscription also contains advertisements and only exists in the United States.

Subscriptions with advertisements

This initiative to insert advertisements on streaming platforms to lower the prices of subscriptions started with HBO Max in the United States, but today other companies are already thinking about doing the same. same. With that, Disney+ has already announced that it will have a subscription option with advertisements. This option will initially launch in the United States later this year, and is expected to continue elsewhere in the world through 2023. Apparently, Disney will do this in order to reach the milestone of at least 230 million subscriptions by 2024.

With these innovations in the market, Netflix is also considering launching an ad-supported subscription option. However, the reality of Netflix is different from that of other companies, as this platform already has 222 million subscribers. However, with the growth of other platforms this may change. In that sense, while ads aren't currently a necessity for Netflix, they could be one day. That's because its dominance among streaming fans might not last forever.
