School dress code in Japan
Schools in Japan normally require students to attend the space wearing uniforms. However, one of the rules regarding garments is that underwear must be white.
Thus, girls should always wear white bras to avoid a visible outline through the uniform. According to schools, the goal is to prevent distractions and not provide a sexualized environment.
Then, the teachers check the bra color of the 12- to 15-year-old students by pulling the strap of the underwear through the shirt. Although not all schools adopt this rule, about half of them still adhere to the rule, which has been the target of great criticism.
According to lawyers in Japan, the practice of checking the color of students' bras is a violation of human rights. Moreover, this is not the only peculiar rule of the country. Others also involve banning the use of accessories, cell phones and even some types of hairstyles.
Other regulations in force in schools in Japan
In Japanese schools, scarves, necklaces, earrings, rings, watches and Mohawk hairstyles are not allowed. The only type of adornment allowed are hair elastics, as long as they are black, brown or navy blue.
In addition, the use of cell phones is prohibited while at school, in order not to jeopardize learning. If the student needs to handle the phone, he/she must go to the parking lot or outside the school after the end or break of classes.
Finally, the Bar Association of Japan produced a report to present to the Board of Education. The document contains advice for schools to reflect on the effect of all these rules on the education of their students.
