WMO warns that the world could warm by 1.5ºC in the next five years

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is a high possibility that global temperatures will exceed a 1.5°C increase in the next five years.

In a statement released on May 17, the entity stated that there is a 66% probability that this increase will occur by 2027.

Adam Scaife, one of the experts involved in the most recent Annual Global Update for the Decadal of WMO Climate, stated that this is the first time in history that it is more likely to exceed the 1.5°C.

In the previous year's report, made in 2022, estimates pointed to a 50% chance of an increase in global temperature by 2027.

One of the factors responsible for this potential global warming is the weather pattern known as El Niño, which is predicted to develop again in the coming months.

During this natural phenomenon, the warmer waters of the tropical Pacific heat the atmosphere, raising global temperatures.

Petteri Taalas, Secretary General of the WMO, highlighted that El Niño combines with climate changes caused by human activity, resulting in global warming.

“It [El Niño] will combine with human-induced climate change to push global temperatures into uncharted territory,” he said in a press release.

Over time, the probability of a 1.5°C rise by 2027 has increased. As an example, between 2017 and 2021, scientists estimated that there was only a 10% chance that this would occur.
