The company has changed the way certain files and/or folders work within Drive. Despite the change being made in 2017, the application has been taking place gradually until it reaches all users. In practice, some of your shared links may fail.
It is worth mentioning that when uploading a file to the cloud, it is possible to host it using a download link. This link can be sent directly to someone specific or be generic in nature. The method is not completely secure. As unlikely as it is, someone can guess the link and gain access to the file.
Thinking about security, Google has inserted a new procedure to make life difficult for hackers. A kind of access key was linked to the link, in order to guarantee an additional security barrier.
Starting next month, more specifically September 13th, some links will change. All files hosted before 2017 will now have the security key. With that, many may stop working because of the update.
Some file types will not be affected; are they:
- Google Docs (documents);
- Google Sheets (spreadsheets);
- Google Slides (presentations);
- Google Forms (forms).
The other file types may suffer and be more vulnerable with the change. Each user who has any material unavailable must be notified by Google about the occurrence. Therefore, when in doubt, it is better to download what is most important.

In addition to the security update, Google will also change the way of backup. In fact, the platform will replace the old “Backup and Sync” option.
The new tool will allow you to keep files stored locally. This makes it easier in cases of internet connection instability. The new feature should make it easier to access files and folders from the desktop.
In the next few days, it's worth checking out the older materials on the Drive. Until the 13th of September it carefully stores the most sensitive files.
