Last week, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, made a statement that demonstrates the intention of the federal government to remove a large number of old cars circulating in the country. The government may offer incentives for owners of very old cars to replace older vehicles with newer models.
During his speech, Haddad revealed that he has already taken the proposal to renew the vehicle fleet to the vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, who also serves as Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services.

“I came to discuss with the vice-president the possibility of establishing a program that uses the fund of the oil companies and dedicate this fund to the ecological transition through the renovation of a fleet of very old cars, which need to be withdrawn from circulation, subject to compensation so that the fleet can be renewed with respect for the environment”, said the minister.
“We are going to set up a team to study [the proposal] and we are going to give feedback to him [the vice president and minister Alckmin]. The process is fast. It is a resource that is already segregated for this,” he added.
According to sources linked to the Government, the objective is to include popular cars in the Renovar Program, which was created during the Bolsonaro government with the original objective of replacing trucks, buses, vans and vans with more than 30 years of manufacturing.
The program's resources come from a fund fed by oil companies operating in Brazil. When oil exploration was granted, these companies agreed to send between 0.5 and 1% of production profits to the Union, precisely to compose these reserves.
