Doritos, Skittles and others: These foods have a dye that is harmful to health

A recent survey, published on December 20 in the journal Nature Communications, discovered a popular food coloring that can be found in many popular foods such as Doritos, Skittles, and many others. It turns out that this dye, called Allura Red AC or Red 40, can lead to Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Waliul Khan, Professor in the Department of Pathologies and Molecular Medicine and a Principal Investigator of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute, as well as senior author of the aforementioned research, said that “this study demonstrates effects significantly harmful effects of Allura Red on gut health and identifies gut serotonin as a critical factor in mediation of these effects”.

Khan also stressed that the study's findings are both impressive and alarming, urging the public to take these findings seriously. “These findings have important implications for the prevention and control of intestinal inflammation,” he says. He continues: "This research is a significant advance in alerting the public to the potential risks of food dyes that we consume daily."

This dye, called Allura Red or Red 40, is widely used in a wide range of foods and beverages, seeking to give a more reddish color to products. The additive is derived from petroleum, being produced in a chemical process that involves the reaction of petroleum-derived intermediates and various chemicals. It is commonly used in combination with other dyes, thus providing different tones and differences in colors.

What products contain this dye that can be harmful to your health? Check the list below:

  • Doritos;
  • M&M's;
  • Skittles;
  • Twizzlers;
  • Starburst;
  • Jelly Belly;
  • Mountain Dew;
  • Fanta.

It is important to emphasize that food coloring is not only included in these listed products, being a merely exemplary list. And finally, just as important as that is to show that not all products from these brands will have the substance. So, always look for this dye and other products that may impact health on the list of ingredients.
