The transplant would have happened in a patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as ALS. This disease gained worldwide prominence after physicist Stephen Hawking developed it. Among its main consequences are the inability to communicate and the partial or complete paralysis of practically all members of the body.
In this way, the Start-Up Synchron chip would be implanted in a blood vessel in the brain and interfaced with a computer. In addition, it has 16 electrodes to monitor brain activities according to thoughts. That is, it would be a task of interpreting neural signals to then amplify them via Bluetooth.
Is a brain chip dangerous?
As we mentioned, this is not the first time that the possibility of creating equipment capable of recording human thinking has been considered or studied. Including the billionaire Elon Musk, who is chairman of Tesla, also joined the discussion. That's because earlier this year, Musk announced that he intended to start marketing a chip that reads thoughts in 2022.
However, the plan was barred by the Food and Drug Administration, which works similarly to Anvisa here in Brazil. After a series of analyses, the agency decided that it would not be possible to release the product. As a result, much has been debated about the possibility of implanting chips in human beings.
In this case, most of the opposition considers moral and religious principles and some conspiracy theories. In addition, it also studies how these materials could influence people's health and well-being. However, for us to have all the answers, we will still have to wait.
