The Origin of Shibuya Honey Toast
This very old meal originated in a district of Tokyo called Shibuya, a busy shopping district. That's where the name came from, something very simple, as much as it doesn't seem. Shibuya became known all over the world, but mainly in countries like Thailand and Singapore.
How to prepare Shibuya Honey Toast?
Shibuya Honey Toast has a honey-coated exterior that is crispy with a warm, soft filling. Learn now how to do it!
Ingredients
- 10 to 15 cm of a piece of milk bread (as if it were bread);
- 1 tablespoon of sugar;
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter;
- 2 tablespoons condensed milk;
- 1 sliced ripe banana;
- 3 tablespoons of honey;
- 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream (or other of your choice);
- whipped cream and garnishes to taste.
Method of preparation
- First, preheat the oven to 180ºC and leave a baking sheet lined with parchment paper reserved;
- Take a small bowl, mix the fruits you choose as a garnish with the sugar and set aside.
- Using a bread knife, start cutting a square down the middle of the loaf, leaving a nice border on all 4 sides and the bottom (these will be your "walls");
- Now, take the square bread cut from the inside and cut into small bite-sized cubes;
- Spread all the pieces of bread (the “box” and the cubes) on a baking sheet and brush everything with a mixture of melted butter and honey;
Note: For the inside walls of the toast box, use butter only.
- Place them inside the oven for about 15 minutes until they are crispy and golden;
- Then remove the bread cubes and continue baking the toast box until crispy, which should take another 10 minutes;
- After taking the toast box out of the oven, brush the inside walls with condensed milk.
- Then place the bread pieces back in the toast box and drizzle with 2 tablespoons or so of honey;
- Finally top the toast with the sugary fruit pieces and add 1 scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor and whipped cream. Decorate as you prefer!
