Do you know how an optical illusion works?

We still don't understand exactly what happens in our brains when we see different optical illusions. However, scientists and artists have been dedicated to learning more about this relationship between reality and perception since the 19th century.

Know that adjunct objects can influence the way you see things. Also, different perspectives can change your view of an object. Sometimes illusions work because of deficiencies in the normal anatomy of our eyes.

New optical illusion that tricks the mind

Check below the image that caught the attention of scientists because it makes the brain dilate the pupil of those who look at it. This is called the Expanding Hole Illusion (in Portuguese, Illusion of the Hole in Expansion), which is a type of black hole that expands according to the time in which it is observed.

A study was published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience on this subject, in which it was verified that around 86% of people are able to perceive the optical illusion.

Evaluate if you are one of them: when you looked at the image, did it seem to move from the center to the edges like an expanding hole? This happens because the pupil reacts to the way we perceive light, even if such 'light' is imaginary, as in this example of an optical illusion.

Therefore, the illusion promotes a dilation of the pupil, as would happen if the darkness were really increasing. Therefore, the darker the hole is, the more effective the optical illusion is in tricking our mind, as the pupil dilates more and more.
