The news that the space agency is selecting astronauts to join the mission was given in an interview with CNN. They claim that, until the end of spring, they still will not be able to reveal which astronauts will be part of the mission in 2024, which will go to the moon in 2025.
Astronaut selection process
The whole process is shrouded in great secrecy, but CNN – through contact with former astronauts and former employees – got some information. In interviews with these former members, some possible names were revealed: Reid Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator, would be the possible leader of the mission. Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, astronauts, would be the first women to perform a spacewalk.
Other names are: Anne McClain, Army pilot; Stephanie Wilson, the oldest astronaut on the team. Finally, they also mentioned the name of Jeremy Hansen, who is the only Canadian in the group.
NASA concerns
Retired astronaut Garrett Reisman told CNN that, in the end, the selected names may surprise and escape speculation. According to him, the process is very meticulous. If there are only medium-sized suits, then they need an extra-large one, most likely the astronaut who would wear it will be discarded. He also points out that the process is not very transparent and, sometimes, even unfair.
In the old days, the selection was even more mysterious, but today astronauts just have to wait with the others to find out who will be sent. Reisman said that this is a opportunity unique and special. He also said that he would be envious of whoever is chosen, for the fact that Artemis this is a historic mission of great importance.
