Longest frozen embryos worldwide

On October 31 of this year, babies were born from embryos held for nearly 30 years, the longest period in history, according to the National Center for Embryo Donation. The material gave rise to the girl Lydia, who was born weighing 5 pounds and 11 ounces (2.5 kg); and boy Timothy, who was born at 6 pounds 7 ounces (2.92 kg)

The most curious thing about all of this is that the freezing occurred when the parents of children, Rachel and Philip Ridgeway were just 5 years old. They were stored on April 22, 1992, after an in vitro fertilization process for an anonymous couple.

The material was kept in a fertility laboratory until 2007, when the couple donated it to the National Embryo Donation Center.

“older” children

Lydia and Timothy were conceived through IVF and have four siblings aged 8, 6, 3 and 2. The funny thing is that, in practice, they are the youngest brothers, but in theory they are the oldest children of the Ridgeway couple.

Parents confessed that when starting fertilization with the National Embryo Donation Center, they requested “the embryos they had been waiting for the longest”. They just didn't anticipate that the material was the oldest ever frozen in history.

According to data from the entity, the embryos can be stored for up to 55 years without any problem due to time.
