See how the change in the ICMS ceiling can impact the price of gasoline

According to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the price The national average for gasoline is R$7.29, which can reach R$8.59, depending on the location. However, due to the approval of the law that provides for the ICMS ceiling reduction, the expectation is that this price will decrease.

Specialists said that it is possible to have reductions in Brazilian fuels if the sanction of the law is effective. Although not a very significant drop, the fuel industry will have a relief. For example, in São Paulo, the price of gasoline would be reduced by R$0.48, while in Rio de Janeiro the price would be reduced by R$1.15.

For comparison purposes, a liter costs an average of R$ 6.90 in RJ, while in São Paulo it costs R$ 7.80. With the drop in the ICMS ceiling, the values would be R$ 6.42 and R$ 6.65, respectively. Today, drivers in Rio pay 25% of ICMS, while drivers in São Paulo pay 34%.

Project seeks to reduce the ICMS ceiling to 17%

On May 25, the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that would prevent the use of ICMS rates. According to the text, the proposal prevents the establishment of a quota for essential goods and restricts the ceiling to 17% in most states.

There is still a possibility that this number will be reduced. Once the future law is published, any state that has reduced natural gas, fossil fuel and electricity quotas will not be able to increase them again.
